40 Hilariously Relatable Memes That Even Freud Would Appreciate (New Pics)
Interview With ExpertMemes can be a great tool for communication, especially when it comes to sharing complex feelings or struggles. Since their introduction online, they've grown beyond silly cat pictures and into a means of discussing mental health, which helps people ease emotional burdens and connect with others online.
One place on the internet where life struggles are widely discussed in the form of memes is the ‘Freud Intensifies’ Instagram account. It helps people’s hardships feel seen, which can be nice in a world that sometimes is isolating and lonesome.
While you're busy checking the Freudian memes, don't forget to peek at a conversation with a licensed psychotherapist and author, Duygu Balan, LPCC, who kindly agreed to chat more with us about using memes to discuss mental health.

Is this the one where one of the authors replied "Tears of happiness, no doubt" ?
I lugged my Organic Chem book around with me on campus. I lugged it around through 8 moves, including one international move. It never, ever, made me cry. And I'm not a chemist. However, "The Time Traveler's Wife" did.
Yes, reading about Nixon's tyrannical corruption did bring many to tears. But he was nothing compared to today's Donlon Trusk.

Licensed psychotherapist and author, Duygu Balan, LPCC, seems to be in favor of using memes to talk about mental health, especially when it comes to the younger generation. "I’ve always been drawn to creative ways of discussing mental health, and memes happen to be one of the most fascinating tools we have today," she told Bored Panda.
"As a psychotherapist with decades of experience and a mother to a teenage son, I see how memes capture the attention of younger generations while offering bite-size insights into complex emotional experiences."
I have done this plenty of times. Sometimes I just need to check on a price or go buy something and can't find what I am looking for so I just walk out.
I have done that as what I wanted was not available or just to check to see what is in stock to get it later on.
Especially going into a store that you would never buy anything at.
I secretly enjoy explaining to new cashiers what that fruit is. Or explaining the difference in a spanish onion vs a vidalia. Yeah, I'm probably annoying.
While she doesn't use memes with her clients, she still tries to provide them with short and relatable examples. "In my professional life, I often use short, relatable examples—similar to memes—to illustrate how mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, or ADHD can impact a person’s day-to-day life," she shared.
"This type of accessible language, which has some overlap with meme culture, helps clients feel understood rather than overwhelmed by clinical jargon."

They probably morphed into a coat hanger. I keep losing articles of clothing but the hangers in my closet seem to multiply. Either clothes morph into them, or the little buggers are breeding.

I lost a favorite barn coat one time. In the summer. One day it was there and then in November it wasn't. Miss that coat, it was nice.
I still wonder about the rolling carry on suitcase I lost in my house. And then, there's the 2 $100 bills I hid somewhere for a rainy day - 4 years ago. These are the kind of things that generate the above second panel for me.
If I’m around chocolate, I better have someone holding me accountable. I will eat a little too much for my own good every once in a while if I don’t!
"Incorporating memes in our interactions can be a fun and meaningful way to spark conversations about emotional well-being and social struggles. It’s much easier for young adults or teens to discuss a witty meme than to sit down for a traditional lecture on mental health," said Balan, summarizing her view on using memes to discuss mental health.
This cat encapsulates my little boy's personality and cuteness so perfectly. He has beautiful big brown eyes that make your heart absolutely melt but his personality is that of a vicious mediaeval lord.
My childhood cat was like this. She was an angel about 95% of the time, but could be mischievous at best and downright defiant at worst the other 5% of the time. It’s been almost 20 years since she passed and I miss her still!
"Yeah, can you write me a doctor's note to be off for a couple of months?, not hospitalized, just a break?" Said by me to my therapist.

She believes that what makes mental health memes so compelling is their ability to turn personal stories into small, relatable snippets. "Storytelling is an ancient form of sharing experiences, connecting to other people, and expressing one’s struggles. From drawings on cave walls to novels, movies, and video games, storytelling is a part of the human condition that provides a gateway to bond with other humans," she explained.
I don't even pretend I'm going to do that after work! I do however tell myself I will do it in the morning before work (which starts at 1pm) and it rarely happens.
Before retiring I had a half hour drive home and I would think something similar and by the time I got home, I end up being to tired to do anything.
When my nephew realised that all my cat does is eat, play, and sleep and also doesn't have to go to school, he said 'i wish I was a cat '
In my next life, I wanted to be a dog, but I changed my mind, I want to be a cat.

According to Balan, taking storytelling and combining it with humor and sarcasm (as memes seem to be doing) can break down stigma and transform taboo topics like panic attacks or toxic relationships into meaningful conversations. "It is a modern form of storytelling, which is a powerful healing practice and a way to connect people. Memes can serve as a bridge between personal experiences and collective understanding, allowing us to find solace in a community that says, 'I’ve been there, too,'" she said.
Omg this happened to me once. I was in uni and met this guy on the first day. Vibes matches and we hit it off. As we had similar subjects so we spent almost 3-4 hours together. Next day I saw him, smiled and opened my mouth and just stood there. I had totally forgotten his name and he realised what has happened. He got so offended and asked me to call him once I know his name. I found out later but even after two decades I can't forget the horror and embarrassment I felt
I wouldn't worry about it. He sounds like a jerk. He could have just laughed about it.
Load More Replies...Me too. I just tell people straight away that I'm glad to meet you,but don't be offended if I don't remember your name. It takes me meeting them about 5 times before the tangled neurons in my head start to function.
Terrible with names. Good with faces. Met a guy on the streets of Washington, D.C. He said something like "Hi, how have you been?" Conversation went from there. He then said "You don't remember me, do you?" "Well, you're Mister Gin & Tonic with a *twist* of lime." He laughed. He'd been a customer for three nights in a bar six years before. I still read journal articles on how memory works. :D
"I have a mnemotecnic trick, I associate the first letter with a fruit and then..." Okay whateveryournameis
I tell people that I have High Functioning Autism and faces to names is something that I have to work on.
As opposed to my husband, who knew every name of every GOT character, including every Night Walker and Unsullied.
One of the characters in a favorite book series (James Qwilleran--The Cat Who) always asks someone to spell their last name if he can't remember it. In one book this massively backfires when someone replies "S-M-I-T-H." I've stolen that fictional trick multiple times.
This is not Hell. This is were we were sent because we were BAD in Hell.
But there has to be a downside to this, doesn’t there? Well, yes, as not all mental health memes are beneficial. "There is a fine line between using humor and sarcasm to convey one’s personal experience and trivializing someone else’s suffering," Duygu noted.
"It is important to use humor carefully as a healthy coping mechanism and not to dismiss someone’s pain. Cynicism can inadvertently minimize suffering, while certain memes might even trigger painful memories in individuals who have experienced trauma. When creating or sharing memes, it is important to approach sensitive topics with empathy and respect. Adding trigger warnings or context can go a long way in preventing harm," she advised.

"Madder than a box of frogs" - there's a reason that expression exists.
I couldn't stop running through Jamiraquai Virtual Insanity in my head last night. Jay Kay keeping me up with them sick beats.
Therefore, it’s important to mindfully engage with mental health memes online. And Balan is here to tell us how. "If you’re going to post or share a meme about a mental health struggle, it’s essential to be aware that someone reading it might be in a vulnerable state. A well-placed disclaimer or thoughtful caption can help set the tone, acknowledging that the meme’s goal is to foster support rather than cause distress," she recommended.
Seriously one of the best pics of Christina Ricci. She is so stinkin cute here. For a little girl her acting skills were already tip top.
Which would you rather be, intelligent but brooding Wednesday; or dumb but happy Pugsley?
"It’s also crucial to remember that memes are not a replacement for professional help or daily coping strategies," she stressed. "If someone finds themselves relying on memes as their primary outlet for mental health support, that might indicate a need to explore more in-depth resources, like therapy or support groups."
Funny thing. The most relaxing, chill bar I ever went to was a goth bar that played a mix of industrial/noise/metal/punk music. As you might guess, it was also far from boring.

Poor Siggy had a real hard time of it. Less deep thoughts, more fun is the answer to our inner angst..
Lastly, Balan concluded by saying, "It is important to consider how online content might affect others, especially those who may be silently suffering and may need real-life support. As much as memes can validate feelings, provide an online community and spark important conversations, they can also unintentionally alienate those who are struggling," she warned.
"It is important to emphasize that memes cannot replace healthy coping mechanisms or the support a community, loved ones, or clinical resources can provide. Humor can lighten heavy topics, but it should always include an invitation for deeper, more meaningful conversations. By using memes responsibly, we can reduce stigma, extend a virtual hand to reinforce constructive ways of dealing with stress, and encourage individuals to seek professional help when needed."
I have literally done exactly this. A customer told me the weather was nice and I enthusiastically thanked her as though she had complimented me. A moment later I felt incredibly stupid.
Or saying it as an affirmation of self confidence and positive energy. (Or saying it ironically if you're having a bad day).
During family therapy my psychologist asked why I'm so negative. I said sth like human mind is naturally negative so we don't die out like dodos. Father said:if you know so much, help yourself. Therapist told him: it's not clear she understands what's she's saying. I love how dumb people think they're insulting me but actually they're willingly revealing their own stupidity.
What an odd thing for a therapist to say. I'm sorry that happened to you.

I've seen an edit of this where the bottom middle was replaced by "I f#ck his wife" 😁
The truth is most people never emotionally matured. Oh, you have a bad day, so you yell at your employee who has to take it? That's emotional immaturity. It is depressing to realise that you're surrounded by abusive, entitled toddlers who have power over you.
So true. And if you react to the constant belittling, well then you are the crazy employee who can't be trusted.

That's one (and probably the intended) way to see it, but it made me think of how the school system manages to annihilate children's natural curiosity and eagerness to learn. Although... I wouldn't be surprised if people were complaining about the same exact thing back in ancient times.

I realised why I had the worst experience looking for help as an abuse victim. Everyone gets angry with me as if I willingly had sex, got pregnant, gave birth and decided to keep my baby self. I'm not my own mother and I exist without my consent. Other people ruined my life and I just gave up.
Adulting sucks! & to think this is what I wanted to be as a kid.
Not me. I approached my 30s like any other age over 18, apathetically. I don't really care I get older, I'm living basically the same life anyway.

You're going to have to pick a different music taste. Yours burned up.
I don't understand people who only like one type of music. I am not a huge fan of certain genres, but I am bound to like at least one song from them.

In France. France is not all of Europe. Southern half has something sweet with the coffee, northern half has something savoury with the coffee. Weird outliers in the UK have something sweet or savoury with tea.
Load More Replies...It's true in some parts of Europe. Something people who post these things seem to not understand is that Europe is not some big country that can be generalized, each country has its own customs. If you see something done a certain way in Poland, or Greece, or Spain, it doesn't mean it's the same for the rest of Europe.

Load More Replies...No me. My favourite birthday memory is my 20th. My mum was busy so for once didn't insist on dinner on the day of my birthday. My housemates were out for work and then something after, so I celebrated by watching tv and eating a store bought lasagne and fairy bread in an empty house. Second best was when I had a rare work from home day so I could write mid year reports (my first year of teaching) and it happened to fall on my birthday. No one at work but my housemate knew it was my birthday. I wrote reports in the morning (it only took a few hours) and then spent the rest of the day watching tv. My house mate brought wine and dinner home after work. I was living 5 hours from my family and so just had phone calls from them.

Your theory falls apart a little in countries where you don't have to pay! There are measurable benefits. Many medical settings use scores to rate pain for cancer patients, for example. Are you saying they are also useless because pain is subjective?
